The Duel

“Damn that Shyll! Where is he?” said Moranon, clutching a dimming green communication crystal. He’d taken a portal to the Merchants’ Guild as soon as the Sky Gauntlet intermission had begun and was standing red-faced in one of the private booths used for business transactions.

He was alone in more ways than one.

“Dammit, he was never supposed to target the girl!”

The crown prince barely managed to stop himself from smashing the crystal against the floor, gripping the sides of the oaken table before him as his fury raged.

Moranon typically approved of the assassin’s methods. That’s why he had him on a long-term retainer. Rarely a month went by without the prince leaning on Shyll’s services to eliminate a loud-mouthed servant here or a prideful merchant there.

But now, Thomas had left the Gauntlet entirely and been mysteriously absent for days. Shyll’s sinister traps were about to stoke the queen’s wrath with nothing to show for it.

Moranon decided to try again one last time, raising the crystal to his mouth and forcing his mana into it.

“Shyll, if you get this message, be warned. The contract is off. OFF! Proceed further and the contract will be moved to your head instead!”

Moranon paused. His breathing came out thick and heavy as he crowded his face closer to the crystal, lowering his voice to a threatening whisper.

“Imagine the gleeful surprise of your old guild friends when they receive my request to: Take. You. Down.”

Moranon released his white-knuckled grip on the crystal, allowing it to clatter to the table. He then settled his breathing, smoothed the front of his jacket, and adjusted his collar. A bowl of steaming hot lavender water materialized from his spatial ring and the prince splashed a handful on his face.

Time to get back before my absence becomes noteworthy.

He wiped his face a singular time on a plush cream towel retrieved from his ring, then flung it into the corner of the room.

As Moranon exited the private booth, a thought flitted through his mind. One more erroneous stunt by Shyll and all his plans could be exposed.

He shook himself, flinging the thought away like water shaken from a wet dog.

No use thinking that. The demons are already on their way.

The notion was gone, yet a foreboding sense of dread remained.

“We found a total of twelve traps, my queen,” said a burly elf with an elaborately curled mustache. “Experts are disarming them as we speak.”

“You have my thanks, Games Master. And you’re certain the final stage has not been tampered with?”

“On the contrary, we found seven traps there alone. But once we knew to look for them, they were easily identified by our High Ranger with his trap finder skill. All the traps, without exception, were located in the area where your champion would have competed, as you suspected,” the elf said, clicking his heels together in a perfunctory salute.

“And what of the monster? No doubt you re-appraised its abilities and constraints thoroughly?”

The elf bowed deeply. “Absolutely, Your Majesty. We discovered no tampering with the monster itself.
